PARENTS AS PARTNERS
IN EARLY LEARNING PROJET(PPEL)
Introduction of the Project:
Over 120 parents of very young children in Southwark are already involved in this exciting one year project. The main focus of the project is to build parents’ confidence and capacity to be advocates for their children’s play and learning experiences, and their language and cultural heritage. It is also to support staff in different early years settings to improve partnership and communication with parents – particularly those who have English as an additional language (EAL) and those who have different cultural backgrounds.

As the initial Parents as Partners in Early Learning Project (PPEL) comes to an end, plans are being developed to continue many of the activities and projects that have been successful  - including ongoing support for parents with English as an additional language (EAL) through the Early Language Development courses run by the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education... more

Funding and Partnerships: The project is funded by the Department for Children, Families and Schools (DCFS) and runs from April 2007 to March 2008. Southwark is one of 12 Local Authorities in London and the South East that is participating. One of the outcomes from the project will be to produce a DVD of the activities and the learning that have taken place that will be shared widely with staff and parents in Southwark. Our evaluation of the project activities will help the Early Years services plan and prioritise ongoing work with parents as partners in early learning across Southwark. Our partners supporting Southwark’s Early Years service providers in the delivery of the project include:
The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) delivering the Early Language Development courses; South Bank University – London Language and Literacy Project (LLU+) delivering the Parents as Mentors accredited training course; In the Picture Video Project, training parents in filming techniques and editing.
